I get that this topic got heavily discussed already but I don't get the argument that it would not be beneficial for enough users as you said here. Love to space out while listening to music and some visuals. I'd really love to have a visualizer in the desktop app again. Just wanted to propose this too! But searched for it and stumbled upon your beautifully written post so I'm going to just give it a vote up and hope that more people think like you and I do. If Spotify isn't already it should be working on adding video to it's product before Google does it with Youtube.
